about

On its second single “Alkali,” the alt-pop duo Pillow Fite pulls a subtle bit of trickery, making a break-up sound fun. Art Ross (they/them) and Aaron Green (he/him) follow up their languid debut single “Playing the Fool” with a slyly upbeat number akin to Phoebe Bridgers’ “Kyoto” or Snail Mail’s “Golden Dream”—dreamy major chords that support a eulogy for a relationship. “Alkali” is a stylistic leap forward for the band, revealing big-hook bravado that only enhances the lyrics’ roiling emotion.

LYRICS

Waiting for the day to come they cut my water supply
always trying to turn the acid to alkali
Why cant i just simply say what's on my mind
Wettened by daily cries hung out to dry
Unlike those other guys

I thought the faces changed like the seasoned trees
I just want to talk but there's always a fee
I clicked the wiki help to guide me
They always laughed at astrology
Unlike those tarot queens

honest words they conjure and gnaw
Its funnelling an ocean through a straw
I’ll try not to faintly withdrawal
Whispering out a clenched jaw

Waiting for the day to come I learn my lessons taught
That you cant live off coffee and pot
I can't help the jitters I got a soft spot
Guess the right words were an afterthought
Bruise like an apricot

honest words they conjure and gnaw
Its funnelling an ocean through a straw
I’ll try not to faintly withdrawal
Whispering out a clenched jaw

I owe it to you and me
For some fucking consistency

honest words they conjure and gnaw
Its funnelling an ocean through a straw
I’ll try not to faintly withdrawal
Whispering out a clenched jaw
honest words they conjure and gnaw
Its funnelling an ocean through a straw
I’ll try not to faintly withdrawal
Whispering out a clenched jaw

Waiting for the day to come they cut my water supply
always trying to turn the acid to alkali
